What are common things to give up for Lent?

What did you give up? Or, what did some friends give up? What are common things to give up?

I usually gave up a food or a TV show as a kid. My mom usually took up an activity or project instead of giving something up. My sister usually gives up icecream because she loves it... LOOOOVES it.

Every year, my mother gave up breads and tortillas. My sister always gave up sweets. I would give up what means a lot to me.

One year I gave up using the telephone. My birthday falls during Lent, and I was stranded at a party where everyone got drunk, including my b/f at the time, and no one could drive me home. I wanted to call home for a ride, but didn't 'cause I gave up the phone, and actually thought it would be a sin to use it. I thought the incident was a test to my faith.

Boy, was I dumb, lol! When I got home the next day, my mom was angry with me until she heard me out. Even she said, "You should have called anyway" and she was super Catholic.

I'm no longer Catholic, no longer Christian. Lent and all the other Catholic rules are man-made. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Catholic church, it's very comforting. However, all the rules that aren't biblical are man-made, so no one needs to follow them. Example: praying the Rosary

Sweets, carbonated beverages, alcohol, nail-biting, etc. It's a good way to get motivated to stop a bad habit even if you aren't religious.
