I have a standard lock thingy for P.E. class but I haven't used it in a while. I forgot the combination. How can I find it again?

Hi! My wife's a retired girl's P.E. teacher, so I asked her and got an ear-full.

1) Some combination locks have a key hole on the backside, so teacher's can open them without knowing the combination. If you've got one of those there's probably nothing you can do, because it is never necessary to keep a record of the combination. Even if you borrowed a key to get it open, there's still no way to determine it's combination.

2) The more common type of lock has no such keyhole, but there is a serial number on the back. At Jo Ann's former school they kept a card file, sorted by serial number, so they could open the every lock, when necessary. If you went back to your old school, a P.E. teacher may be able to look it up your old combination for you. All combination locks with the same serial number have the same combination. Because of this, if you were to contact the lock's manufacturer they would probably NOT tell you the combination. How do they know you're not a thief, planning to rip somebody off?

3) In case you've forgotten, the procedure for opening your lock is: First, clockwise a minimum of two turns then stop on the first number. Second, counter-clockwise one turn (past the first number) and then stop on the second number. Third, clockwise directly to the last number. If you can't remember the last number, you can try stopping at each position and tug on the hasp until you discover the last number. Jo Ann insists that if she reminds a student of the opening procedure, and if the student can muster-up a positive attitude, 90% can remember a "forgotten" combination within one class period. She says, "Just relax and keep trying to open the lock. Try whatever numbers pop into your head. Eventually, the old familiar numbers will come to mind. When you do get it open, write down the combination immediately (before you reclose the lock).

There you have it, the result of 41 years of dealing with tens-of-thousands of forgotten combinations. My personal old-fart's cynical opinion is, just go buy a new lock.

Good luck....................

lock 'thingy'? if it is a combination built into a locker, go to you coach and say you forgot it, and need it again. If it is a combination lock that you put through the holes on the door and frame of the locker, get youself a heavy duty pair of leveraged cutters, then buy a new lock!

(cut the lock, not the locker...)

You probably can't, so if there is a place for a key on the back, the school will have a copy of that key, and you can get it off the locker that way...or have it cut off. Next time, send yourself an email with the combo and save that email...that way you can always have it somewhere.

I just so happen to have bookmarked a video that shows you EXACTLY how to do that!

His method looks a bit tedious and complicated, but in reality, the whole process should take you less than 1 hour. Chances are that partway through the process, you'll remember the combination.

Try all the possible combinations.
