If you found a place where the food was $7 I would want to know. Other than maybe Chinatown, I haven't seen a price like that in a long time. I can't even find a burger for that price. You can get a wrap for that price. Good place at Columbus Street It's a Wrap.
For inexpensive, considered so by friends from out of town, feel they get their money's worth, but not $7, is Barking Dog Cafe, there are 3 of them in NYC, 2 on upper east side, one in midtown.
As I said, Chinatown, maybe Little Italy - Puglia's. Stay away from Soho and Tribeca. Probably can find some things on Upper Upper east side around Columbia University, and maybe something in Village around NYU.
Best to look thru Zagats. Don't think a lot of NYer's are going to know a lot of really cheap places. We are accustomed to the prices as they are and pay them. That's what comes with living here. Not to be nasty, but when was the last time you were here?

I'm so glad that someone asked this question - there is a wonderful little place in Chinatown called Tasty Dumpling. It's right behind Columbus park and the NYC Courts.
The menu prices are great, for $5 I can get about 20 dumplings and something to drink. Everything is prepared right there and the couple that runs the store are very nice.
I can't for the life of me remember the street its on, only that its between Mosco and Bayard on the right side as you travel north. Whatever the street is, it's between Baxter and Mott and is 1-way northbound.

Cosmic Diner down 8th has really good breakfast, lunch, and dinner that's reasonably priced. Their feta omelettes and bison burgers are pretty good :)
