the purpose of religion in general is to find meaning and purpose in our lives. It searches for truths that go beyond the physical realm. It asks and attempts to answer questions, such as "who am I?" , "what is my purpose?", etc. I am a CAtholic, and my beliefs help me and others live better lives and to know God's purpose in everyone's life, which is salvation through Jesus Christ.

The original intent of religion was to explain why and how things happened. For example, the seasons, the sun, how humans came into existence, etc. Religion also served as a guidebook for moral conduct. Why? Because humanity would be a mess without it. I admit though, we cannot survive in peace with or without it. Just look at the world today and the wars going on. We are a race that is spiraling towards our doom and it is our doing.

I do not believe for one second that religion plays a part in your everyday decision making and how you treat other people. If it does, then you have major issues. If the only thing holding you back from punching out your boss, cheating on your spouse, or keeping that lost wallet is the ten commandments, then you need to re-evaluate your rationale. Doing the right thing shouldn't have to be a process or following protocol, it should be second nature.

Religion has no purpose for me - I'm an atheist. But it serves a purpose in others lives. Gives them hope, a moral system, a sense of community, a way to hand down traditions.

I find meaning without religion, but I think society evolved with religion and it's difficult to leave it by the wayside so easily.

Religion does nothing for you. Having a personal relationship with God the creator of the whole world, everything in the world, including people, is the what affects the way we live our lives. Alot of people say that they believe in God, but they don't want to submit to a higher authority. I am a christian, and I believe that God created the world, and created everyone in it. He has put all of us here for a reason, and has offered us a choice. He sent his son(Jesus) to die on the cross over two thousand years ago, by Jesus dying on the cross, that took away our eternal punishment.
Everyone in the world has sinned, and because God is perfect, sin cannot be in his prescence, so in order for us to go to heaven, we had to be made clean from the sin. So by Jesus dying on the cross, our sins are forgiven when we ask, and we are made clean, therefore are now able to go to heaven when we ask God to be rulers of our life. I know this is probably confusing, but if you read a NIV Bible, it will explain all of this. I hope that you find the answers you are looking for!!!!

it does nothing for me. my lack of beliefs tends to make me more openminded to reason because i'm not handicapped by religious walls. I'm an athiest.

The purpose of religion is hope, following, and blame. It gives people hope, it gives them something to follow and shape their ideas, it assigns blame to the bad things that happen.
