You really should get a stuffed animal. It's not fair to the dog to be home all day by himself. You don't need it if you don't have the time for it.

Puppies take a lot of time, regardless of breed. Choosing an older dog out of a pound is a good option. Especially if you can talk to the handlers and ask for a quite, good natured dog.
Don't pick a terrier (Jack Russel, Rat) they tend to be hyper, demanding, and occasionally vindictive.. Don't pick a herding breed (border collie, heeler, Australian shepherd, kelpie) they want something to do, and if you don't give them something to do, they'll find something to do - chase cars and people, dig holes, climb fences, dig out the sprinkler system, chew up the landscaping - you won't like it. Labs are nice dogs for urban families with a back yard. They are usually good with kids and not too hyper. And they love to go for bike rides and walks. And they're easy to find.
My suggestion though is to go to a pound and ask the handlers which dog they would recommend.

how about a stuffed dog, or a ceramic dog,you could probably make a recording of a dog barking to make the dogs come alive.
positive points would be.
no cost to feed.
come home as late as you like with out concerns about the dogs well being.
get two stuffed dogs or two ceramic dogs to keep[ each other company
also no dog poop all over the place to pick up.
good names for the pooches
name one bow and the other wow

I'm assuming you have a big yard. If you don't, STOP here. Two working parents need dogs that can run around while you are at work.
Other than that, I'll watch for what KIND of dog is good with kids, cause we are thinking of getting dogs too, and we have a big yard.

Really, I dont think if you have alot of time then you should not get a dog unless your kids are old enough to take care of him/her. dogs require alot of time.
with that said an adult dog would be best because they dont require as much time as puppys, Labrador Retrievers are pretty good dogs to have with kids.

Get one of those electric robot dogs. If neither one of you are at home, you've got no business getting a pet.
