Be appreciative by saying thanks. Don't put yourself down on the things they compliment you about or it will sound like you are not agreeing with their view. Not agreeing is rude, so always try to agree with what they say. Even if you don't quite like your hair or dress, just say, do you think so? thanks! I like your ring/bracelet etc though. Ie. compliment them in return.

It really depends on the situation, the person who gives you the compliment and the compliment itself. And, yes, it depends on the gender. Are a male or a female? Does the compliment comes from a male or a female. Yes, I am talking about human beings...
Give me some more information so I can give you good advice. Here's a sample:
Male to female, just acquaintances: "You look amazing tonight." Response: "Thank you, I am just trying to blend in. You look great, too."

Thank you! There is nothing else that needs to be said. Just acknowledge the compliment, if anything further is required it will be because the thank you was followed by a question. Just simply say thank you and smile. And keep in mind, you are worthy of the compliment. God bless****

unless u honestly like something else about the other person to compliment you dont have to. they say "oh your hair looks so nice" simply smile and say thank you, they may go into detail when was it done, who did it etc just answer say glad u like it or something. best to be a bit shy than a bit cocky when someone compliments you dont act like u deserve it or u already know it, no one will want to say nice things to you again. just be polite.

I personally believe the nicest response is simply thank you. If you return the compliment or come up with another compliment it doesn't seem genuine. A simple thank you says it all.

Just say something like "thank you", or "that's so nice of you to say". Being dismissive isn't necessary. Someone was nice enough to compliment you, so you thank them.

Just look at the person, smile, and say sincerely, "Thank you, (person's name if you know it)."

Take it as sincere. A complement is a stroke. Someone took the risk to say something to you. By responding, you return the compliment and honor the person when you smile and acknowledge it.

Say thank you, and don't put yourself down. For example, if someone complements your haircut, don't say that you think it looks stupid. It implies that you're pathetic, and embarrasses the nice person who gave the compliment.
