"thrashed" as we would say 27 years ago. i think it is called IPT now im not sure. it was a form of punishment of extensive exercises whenever a recruit would screw up. sometimes we would be "thrashed" several times a day. my question is, do the other services do the same thing or is it only a marine corps thing?

Research physical abuse and hazing in the Russian Army.
Pay special interest to Spetznatz final physical exams.
The final combat section is a series of extreme fights with senior instructors who are replaced at 3 minute maximum interval. You fight them after a long run with full battle gear and a round of specific exercises( 200 sit ups, 200 push ups and so on.)
My nose is still only on the front side of my face, just a bit towards the right, mostly, sort of.
Spetznatz are noticable for broken noses.
Spetznatz officers with straight noses are very scary.
I can only respect their physical skills.
Notice that they allow us no live ammo or actual knives during testing. Even the shovels for our tanker units are fake. If an instructore was killed during training it would be recorded as an accident. A soldier would also be an accidental! They do die from training and testing! It is the only time where it is almost even, and many of the Khazacks try to take advantage of the only time they will ever have even odds.
If you manage to get past your instructors then your are a specialist. If not, then you are not even able to be in a regular military unit. The russians specialists forces serve as specialists inside of the rest of the units. A ship might have 20 specialists. They are Navy. But they are specialists. They might be taken from the ship and teamed with infrantry and air specialists for a special task. This is unlike it is in western forces from what I have heard. In western military each arm is separate. Navy has its own, seals, marines different, Army has Ranger units. Russian spreads specialists all through military. When they need a specialist unit they just take what they want.
I never meant to say so much. Sorry.

When I was in USMC boot camp a couple years ago we called it being "smoked", "f**ked up", or ITd. Boy was that fun trying to "build the house", or push, while your hands slipped out from under you in the pools of sweat on the quarterdeck.

The Army does it also, but I'm not sure about the Navy or the Air Force.

The Navy does this too. We call it getting smoked when our RDC (that's navy speack for a DI) does it. If you are in extreme need of an attitude adjustment they send you to get a major butt kicking of PT from some hard core Seal types. If you fall out at any point you get to do it all over again the next day.

My husband knows an army DI and he accidentally left a recruit doing push ups - cause he ordered them as a punishment - went inside for about an hour for paperwork. Came back out and whoops....

Happens in the army all the time... During my time, it was a minimum of 20 pushups for every single mistake.

Punishment is punishment no matter where you come from, where you are, and where you are going. Time to bring back corporal punishment for unruly children. Too soft nowadays!
