In Hebrew, that phrase means something along the lines of "I am the is-ing". I know that sounds crazy, but it's like God is telling everyone that He is the state of being. He is the definition of life, in other words.

Sounds like a song in the 70s or 80s by Gloria Gaynor
"I am what I am
I am my own special creation
So come take a look
Give me the hook
Or the ovation
It's my world
That I want to have a little pride
My world
And it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a dam
Till I can say
I am what I am
I am what I am
I don't want praise I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham
Till you can shout out I am what I am..."

Exactly. God has no "time". That is human invention. God just is.
Not bad grammar: Break it up
I am that
I am
What some don't comprehend is that we are the "that"-along with the rest of the Universe. This is *being* in God's image.

It means that God always was, always is, and always will be. It means simply that He is. Difficult concept to understand because we humans like to make everything so complicated, but it is that simple.

It reminds me of Popeye's saying, "I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam, I'm Popeye the sailor man."
