Peers can act as models of behavior, role models if you will that are observable options of behavior. If the values, principles, beliefs of the peers are contrary to those of the parents, it can create conflict and dissonance on the child and frustrate his/her develop progress or turn it in directions the parents did not desire.....
Likewise, peers can also influence development in a postive way as well.

Peer acceptance is VERY important to a child. Once they begin to understand that their parents will accept them regardless (well, in most families), they must turn elsewhere to be accept for who they are. When this happens, children will be looking for positive reinforcement. Once they receive it, they will continue those behaviors that earned them the response they were looking for. But, in the case where the child does not receive the positive reinforcement, no matter how often they try, the child will become introverted and become the proverbial "loner".
So basically, peers have a major impact on the development of a child and their personality as they grow, especially on their way through grade school and into the teenage years.

A child gets easily influence from his surroundings. So if his or her group is good it would influence him or her in a right way and thus would bring right development in him or her. Thats what actually happens and hence peers do affect child's development

It depends of the 'brain level' of the peers; if the peers are stupid then the child will follow suit - if the peers are smart then the child will be stimulated to learn also.
Proof of point; when children attend school - guess what they bring home................ other children's habits - especially the bad ones.

When you are surrounded by a lot of very tall people, to find someone exactly like you is exciting. That excitement needs to be MONITORED. Because People like them are not always well adjusted. You have to WATCH closely who your child hangs out with. Up until they are 18. That's my cut off point.
