I'm 5'8", weigh 190lbs and ski on 167cm K2 Apaches.

the ski should reach to somewhere around your nose to your eyes these days, although as several people have pointed out, with sidecut skis this is less important than it use to be (i used to ski on 190cm straight skis)
it will be tricky to get skis that will last at your age. the optimal length for you right now is about 155 but you will grow. if you are an fairly good skier it would be worth buying slightly longer skis (160). if your are a beginner this would set you back - so it may be better to rent for a season or 2.
if you are in competitive skiing check with your coach.

Size used to matter MUCH more than it does now. Most skis have a side cut to them, which kind of does away with a lot of the size issue. Back before the side cut, a longer ski was needed to provide more edging power, but now the side cut gives extra edge in a shorter length. 150 -155 should be good for you, but more importantly will be buying the correct type of ski for your area/ski ability. Buying a ski that is byond your abilitites will make for a miserable experience as the things will want to race away from under you. Getting too easy a ski may be fun sometimes becasue you can over power them, but will really limit your progress. Consult with your ski shop sales man and do a lot of research. Be honest about your ability as well. It will help you get the ski that will give you the MOST fun. But try something a little beyond your skills so you can grow into them.

It all depends on your preference, type of ski, and experience. If you are an experienced expert skier, you could go all the way up to about a 165 or so. If you are not an experienced skier, then I would say about a 150. The taller the ski, the harder it will be to control, but if you are an expert, it is recommended that you go bigger.

If you go for a 150 or so, you might want to try a twin tip ski. Those are always fun all around.

If you go for the 160 something, you might want to try a type of racing ski (If you like to go fast, the taller ski will allow you to do so)

When i was 12, I had a 170, because I had been skiing since I was 3.

I suggest renting before you buy (try different sizes, and whichever one you like, go for that size).

Good Luck!

There's no magic formula, although you'll read about them everywhere. The right length for you is probably 155 plus or minus 5 cm, which translates to about 2 inches. More importantly will be what type of ski you will buy. What type of condidtions do you typically ski in? Groomed, powder, ice? If you're going to take on the bowls & rails, maybe you want shorter twin tips, for example. If you're just starting out, you should consider renting skis for a season and see what works best for you.

The usual measurment are that you should have skis that reach you to your mouth/nose, so iff you are 5'6'' i guess your ski's should be about 150 like your brother says.
