Description
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) literally means imperfectly formed bones. People with OI have an error (mutation) in the genetic instructions on how to make strong bones. As a result, their bones break easily.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also known as brittle-bone disease, is a genetic (inherited) disorder characterized by bones that break easily without a specific cause.

The following are the most common symptoms for osteogenesis imperfecta. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Although symptoms may vary, generally they are used to classify the four forms of OI, each of which represents the severity of the condition.

Type I:
most common

1. bones fracture easily
2. can usually be traced through the family
3. near normal stature or slightly shorter
4. blue sclera (the normally white area of the eye ball)
5. dental problems
6. hearing loss beginning in the early 20s and 30s
7. most fractures occur before puberty; occasionally women will have fractures after menopause
8. triangular face
9. tendency toward spinal curvatures

Type II:

1. newborns severely affected; frequently fatal
2. usually resulting from a new gene mutation
3. very small stature with extremely small chest and under developed lungs

Type III:

1. tend to be isolated family incidents
2. very small in stature - some only 3 feet tall
3. fractures at birth very common
4. x-ray may reveal healing of in utero fractures
5. severe early hearing loss
6. loose joints and poor muscle development in arms and legs
7. barrel-shaped rib cage

Type IV:

1. can frequently be traced through the family
2. bones fracture easily - most before puberty
3. normal or near normal colored sclera
4. problems with teeth - more than Type I
5. spinal curvatures
6. loose joints

The symptoms of osteogenesis imperfecta may resemble other medical conditions or problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a group of genetic disorders that mainly affect the bones. The term "osteogenesis imperfecta" means imperfect bone formation. People with this condition have bones that are brittle and easily broken. Multiple fractures are common, and in severe cases, can occur even before birth.
