I noticed that after having knee surgery, it was much easier to walk up hill than it was to go downhill. Since the knee isnt being fully extended while going up hill it helps to cut down on the strain

I've found running up hill to be easier on my knees than downhill. I think it has something to do with the shorter stride length. I used to have some knee pain while running, and I tried the following (which seemed to have helped):

1. I read that if you always run on the same side of the street, you'll put more strain on one leg (because the streets slope to the curb...makes sense...so I mixed it up a bit).
2. I started taking Glucousamine / Chondrotine..I just take 1/2 of what they tell you. You can find it in the Vitamin aisle.
3. Try some leg strengthening exercises (see link below).
4. Make sure your shoes aren't too old or have more than 400 miles (running & walking). They lose their elasticity & cushioning over time and miles.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Usually. Running downhill has a much harder "jarring" effect on your knees. More important than that is the type of ground you are running on. Concrete for example is very hard on your knees and shins, while dirt, grass, and soft tracks cushion your running.

Yes. It puts more pressure on your quads and back, but it is easier on the knees.
