I'd say go to the salon because home hair dye leaves hair with flat, ugly color. Most reds will last a long, long time, but will fade. Basically your hair will have a red tinge forever, but its brilliance fades faster than any other color. Your best bet is to use color-safe shampoos/conditioners after you color, then regularly get touch-ups.

My hair has always been hard to dye. The only dye that lasts a long time on mine is Loreal Feria.

It depends on your hair color. If you are a few shades lighter than you want to be, just use a color rinse shampoo and conditioner. Your hair will look MUCH MORE NATURAL than permanent die, plus you don't need to have your roots done. If this isn't you, go to a professional, because its much cheaper than if you mess up and you need to have your hair color removed.
