The truth will set you free is a term or figure of speech that relieves the person from the bondage of self.No longer does the secret keeper or deciever have to suffer the inner conflict created by not being true to yourself . If the truth is spoken , there will be no need hide a lie .
As far as heaven goes, what ever you do or say will possibly be played like a movie for you and your family while God is laughing at you .If you are good he will share his popcorn with you .

Think about this. The best slave is a slave who is not aware he is a slave. The same could be said for a sinner. Once YOU KNOW TRUTH, YOU HAVE THE POWER to release yourself from the mental/spiritual chains that keep you tied. Heaven and Hell are right here right now. And in some towns and cities all that separates the two is a road/street. All of these things are states of mind which affect our physical lives. To know truth is to know just a small fraction of who/what our universal god is according to our limited comprehension as a species.

The truth sets you free in the sense that you no longer have to be afraid of a burning firey torment that some people define as hell, you no longer have to cow down to superstition and traditions which are based on lies. You no longer have to fear the dead because you know that they are unconscious. You no longer have to act out of fear--you can act out of loving concern. Heaven is totally unattainable for most but that is a good thing. God made man for the earth and the earth for man.

You should have read the discourse before you posted your question. What Jesus meant was people who accept him as the messiah (the truth) will be set free from the bondage of the Mosaic Law and sin.
That's why in John 14,6 Jesus is able to say: "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh to the Father, but by me."
Peace and every blessing!
