Hey guys have a quick question for you. I was standing second in line at the checkout counter with my two purchases, a collard shirt and a pair of denium shorts. I was holding them sorta flung over my forearm, so the top of the shirthad formed a tiny point and stuck out about 6'' or so. The girl in front of me was a very animated talker, and she backed into me. I thought nothing of it at the time, she aplogized, but as she walked away, rather slowly, and the cashier finished ringing up my shirts, I noticed there was a burst pimple on her back, she was wearing a tank-top, and that it was bloody, I could see it gleaming under the lights. I then nervous that she had backed into my shirt and got her blood on it. I am worried about HIV and Hep C. Can I get them if her blood came into contact with my shirt and I put the shirt on? Will a simple was in hot water with detergent kill off anything in her blood, like HIV or Hep C? PLease let me know, I am freaking out.
Thanks

HAHAHA Bob, this one is your silliest yet! Thanks so much for all the creative writing skills you put into these! (are you whistling and looking away right now???)
Same answer, same as always, NO!
Ok, why did you move your story back into the grocery store? May I suggest a new location.... perhaps the gym, a club? Something back at school? I liked the one where you were a teacher as well! Maybe you can be an athlete and someone can get a cut and expose you?? That would be fresh blood and make the story a but more plausible.
Well, if you are a Christian, have a lovely Lent! I guess you are not giving up the HIV/HepC questions for it, but they are entertaining at the least! Have a good week!
Oh, BTW I give this one a 5 due to the repetitive nature of the setting, thought the popped zit was creative. If it had been a band-aid again I would have given you a 3.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is fragile. Once the virus is outside the body in a dry form, it dies immediately. Even in a wet state, it does not live long when exposed to heat, detergents, or disinfectants.

HIV is transmitted only through unprotected penetrative sex (vaginal, anal, oral) with an infected partner, transfusion of infected blood and blood products, contaminat ed needles and syringes, and from an infected mother to her baby before, during delivery or through breast milk.

There are three series of Hep. Hep A, Hep B, and Hep C. They each have a different shelf life outside the body.

HAV can live outside the body for months, depending on the environmental conditions.

HBV can survive outside the body at least 7 days and still be capable of transmitting infection.

Recent studies have shown that HCV can survive outside the body and still transmit infection for 16 hours, but not longer than 4 days.

I'm not sure about other diseases, but simple hot water will kill the HIV. If it was on there, its probably dead already. HIV is not very good at living outside of a human body. As long as a open part of your skin (a cut or scratch) didn't touch her blood you're fine. What are the odds that a random girl has HIV anyway?

I guess you are better safe than sorry, but don't freak out, just wash the shirt carefully, good hot water will kill anything that could hurt you.

You are likely ok. I would not wear the shirt until I wash it but there are 1000's of nurses and doctors that are around HIV, HepC and many other gross diseases which sometimes get on their clothing. There is not an outbreak amoung the healthcare providers due to blood on clothing. One time I refused to go home (to my family) with my clothes on. I even threw my shoes away but it was due to a pt that had Hep C, Aids (full blown) and TB. It was probably fine but I could not get over that. I put on hospital scrubs and hospital nonslip socks and got rid of every thing else. It was probably overdone but you have be comfortable.

Absolutely! I have Hep C from a Major operation in 1980 with the
tainted blood, and you & I blood - blood would quicklly die.
Those 2 together is a death sentence! We had almost the same
cocktail, Interferon & Rebetron, after 5 months I was hospitalized.

All the Best,
Summer

My biggest concern here is HepB. But by washing the shirt and leaving it out in the sun for a while will fix that. As for HIV, once it it
is outside the body, it dies very quickly. You have nothing to worry about.

With your obsession about HIV and moving next door to someone else where they might be using the bathroom, you really sound like you're a lot of fun in the sack. I bet it takes a couple of drinks before you can work up the courage to kiss someone and then it probably takes hours of listerine, lysol and guilt before you can forget about the icky experience.
