I had a long history of migraine headaches. I used to have these throbbing, pressure headaches. They occur often. The pains get so severe to the point I get so nauseous and feel like vomiting. I have cold and clammy hands and feet and felt so cold. I was diagnosed with chronic sinusitis. I also have severe nasal allergies.
Eventually, one doctor ordered Cat Scan. It showed that I had two nasal polyps. I went to an EENT specialist who diagnosed me with severe sinus infection. Surgery was recommended which I agreed secondary the prolonged history. He scraped and drained the sinuses and discovered DIFFUSED nasal polyps. These were resected and sent them for testing. Thank God !. It was just benign.
However, I'm glad my problem with sinusitis was addressed. Thereafter my migraine headaches which originated from the base of my neck and across my forehead and temple were dissipated.
There are two types of sinus infection: acute and chronic sinusitis. Acute sinusitis could be caused by the common colds, allergic rhinitis or hay fever, and the flu.and infection. Symptoms of pain usually occurs where the sinuses are particularly affected. If you have a bout of more than four episodes per year, then it's termed chronic sinusitis.
Sinuses Involved in Infection
If there is pain between your eyes, if pain is worse with eyeglasses on- Ethmoid Sinusitis
If there is pain over your cheekbone, pain like a toothache - Maxillary Sinusitis
If there is pain that is severe and over your forehead - Frontal Sinusitis
If there is pain that is deep-seated, from many areas, including behind your eyes, at the top of your head, and at the nape of your neck- Sphenoid Sinusitis
These cavernous or paranasal sinuses are located mostly in the cheekbones in the face and are easily viewed via CAT SCAn or MRI of the head.
Sinuses are the hollow spaces around the cheek bones that warm, filter and moisten the air. These passages have a very essential responsibility in sustaining a person’s health. Healthy sinuses have a direct effect on the overall well-being of a person. When the sinuses get clogged it can cause headaches, allergy headaches, congestion, colds and sinus infections.
There are even cases of severe maxillary sinuses infection that pts underwent dental work. They attributed their problems to toothaches when in reality it was sinus infection.
One of the causes of sinus trouble is the failure of the system It disrupts the natural process done by the cilia of filtering the air for impurities before going into the body. Due to excessive amount of impurities in the air, the cilia is not able to filter all of it thus causing the sinuses to clog which in turn results to health problems such as sinus infection.
Sinus infection can be diagnosed through the symptoms exhibited by the patient, through a physical examination, X-rays and sometimes in order to be sure doctors let the patient undergo MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT scan (Computed Tomography)
.
Sinus infection exhibits similar signs and symptoms to that of the common cold or flu. This usually happens when there is a build -up of harmful bacteria in the sinus cavity. When sinus infection happens the person will experience headache, fever, sinus congestion, drainage, runny nose, sore throat and post nasal drip.
Once the antibiotics effect wears out ; you’ll be back to the same problem because the primary problem is still there.
Since sinus infection has similar signs and symptoms to that of the cold or flu many think that; that is what they are suffering from. However the common cold only lasts about 7 up to 14 days and can disappear even without medication.
Since the surgery; I have been successful in keeping my sinuses well drained and avoid sinus congestion and thus the headaches. I regularly take antihistaminics to treat my nasal allergies.
Hope I thoroughly answered all of your questions and concerns re your acute sinusitis and symptoms of migraine headaches.
At least the MRI ruled out any tumors and growths. That's a great sigh of relief for you, I'm sure ,as it was for me. As you can see, acute sinusitis or sinus infection can cause migraine headaches.

Sinus headaches can be excruciatingly painful! Also, the infection causes other migraine-like symptoms like light sensitivity, nausea, dizziness, and foggyness. This could definately be the source of your pain "migraines". There are different sinus cavities, but I think the most common infections are located in the ones above your eyebrows and between your cheek bones and your nose. As far as I know, the sinus infection showed up on the MRI because the sinus cavities are in your head and would be viewed during the brain scan. Get on the antibiotics fast and feel better!

RE:
I just had a MRI on my brain and brain stem- result is acute sinus infection. Where would the infection be?
How far back do your sinus' go that it would show up on a brain scan? I've been having severe migraines. Would this infection possibly be causing this pain?

Sinuses are hollow spaces within your skull bones. The largest are in your cheek area and in your forehead. They can be seen on the MRI of your brain because an MRI of your brain also includes views of your skull by default. People who have problem sinuses frequently experience headaches, although they may not be the migraine type of headache.

You probably are not having true migraines but a sinus headache that hurts so bad that you think it is a migraine. See an Ear Nose and Throat Dr and get a long term course of antibiotics. Also consider doing saline nasal rinsing to clean out your sinuses. You want to get this cleared up because chronic sinusitis really sucks and your headaches could become very hard to treat and cure. I use a Hydropulse twice daily to clean the gunk out of my sinuses to keep my sinusitis under control. good luck
