Once in a while.

Jeremy Taylor (a renowned dream interpreter) indicated the that nightmare is the subconscious mind's attempt to give your conscious mind an important message. These dreams will go away if you pay attention to these symbolic dreams.

A Jungian therapist would be a good way to interpret and get to the bottom of this. Otherwise, you might be able to join a local group that gets together to interpret dreams.

I'd avoid "formula-ic" dream interpretation. Jeremy Taylor has a fairly sophisticated approach. See the following links:

"Dream researcher and author, Jeremy Taylor, has found that 'thinking backward,' starting with the last dream image and using it to link your way back through the entire dream, helps dream recall. The regular practice of reviewing your entire day backwards at bedtime has been found to help dream recall, and in many instances, an entire night's dreams."

Good luck with these dreams.

One of the best tramatic dreams that I have had is when I was shot between the eyes with a bullet and for the next week I saw and eyeball looking back at me...a new level of awareness begun. Then the alien dreams are always interesting. Take notice if anything developes from the dream and keep a journal for future references.

I had a series of recurring nightmares when I was a teenager which ultimately was the catalyst for my insomnia. I have chronic insomnia and have had for 12 years. My dreams were about ghosts inhabiting my body and strangling me. I would finally wake up sweating and unable to breathe.

If you keep having nightmares which disturb your sleep, I would try and get it sorted as soon as possible so that your sleeping patterns aren't interrupted and you don't start to suffer insomnia.
