Weight loss occurs when you consume fewer calories than you burn. There are a lot of soups on the market now that have a fairly low calorie content per serving (under 200). Progresso (I think) is even running an ad campaign with regard to 'soup diet'.

I eat soup for lunch a lot, and try to buy flavors that are less than 400 calories for the 2-serving can. I eat a can of soup for lunch and it's a filling meal (no crackers!). Some of the flavors are around 100 cals a serving.

So yes, you can lose weight by eating soup if you watch the amount of calories and have enough activity/exercise in your day to burn more calories than you consume.

I guess it all depends on the soups you are eating. Back in the 70's there was this cabbage soup craze(for lack of the real name). It caused alot of gastro-intestinal problems and people got fed up with the misery and quit. Just eat healthy portions of food, excersize, and drink plenty of fluids (water, gatorade etc). If you can afford it Jenny Craig has an excellent program with great food. Other than that I would by the low cal entrees and dinners (no particular name) from the grocery store. I limited my calories to 1200 a day (3 meals) and for snacks I chose to eat popcorn, or low fat sweets in between. I lost 25-30 lbs within 60 days.

My understanding is that eating a bowl of broth based soup before a meal helps the diner feel full faster, and consume less calories. If I'm thinking about the same study you are, it seems like the soup eaters lost more weight than those that ate salad before a meal, or drank water. I can't remember how long the groups were studied.
I guess the key is lots of broth that helps fill you up, a satisfying taste, and low calories. check out the link!

I think a lot of prepackaged type meals can help you eat healthy because they contain the proper portion and you can't eat too much.

I think soup is a lot healthier than junk food, but it depends on what kind. Baked potato or vegetable? Generally, I just stick to the healthy choice or low sodium soups. Some other soup can contain 90% of your daily sodium!! Learn how to scan nutrition info, its really helpful.

I read the same thing a while back. Reason I read was that soup takes longer to consume therefore letting the body feel full. Whe someone eats a sandwich it can be eaten quicker before giving the body a chance to feel full.

Many soups, especially progresso, have 100 cal. servings, so it would take 1 servings to meet your maximun daily intake. Really cool, huh! Now if only I liked soup...
