The one I went to this evening didn't, but the one my parents went to in the morning did (different churches). I was thinking it might have been because theirs was part of the daily mass but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

All Masses celebrate the Eucharist (Holy Communion).

But some services may just be a Liturgy of the Word and not a full Mass where no Communion is distributed.

With love in Christ.

The Ash Wednesday mass always has a communion service. What you went to was probably a liturgy of the word service because no priest was available. But even so, they could have given communion with consecrated hosts.
Peace and every blessing!

I'm not catholic, so I can't comment about Mass. But when I went to church tonight for Ash Wednesday service (United Methodist) we got the ash cross on our foreheads and partook of Communion later.

I don't know if it's a common thing to do first service of Lent or if it's something all UM churches do for Ash Wednesday. *sigh* I confess, I am not a very good attendee of Lenten services so I can't be considered an authority.

Just thought I'd share what we did tonight.

Normally, the Ash Wednesday mass DOES give out communion. The only thing I can think of is that the priest ran out of time because there were a lot of people to receive ashes . . . oh well . . .

If Communion was not distributed, it was not a Mass. Some churches do offer non-Eucharistic services for the distribution of ashes.

this evening was probably just the commemorative service. some churches have the ashes out and you can do it yourself throughout the day - granted i was not used tp that and didn't go back but..... at my church the afternoon mass was a mass and the eveninng was just a service -- no worries!! today was not a holy day of obligation.
