There are different types of depression. A situational type would be something happens; their girlfriend leaves. They feel sad, don't want to socialize, lose appetite (or eat more), sleep too much.

More advanced would be; find it nearly impossible to get up, take care of themselves, have suicidal thoughts.

Moodiness that is out of proportion to recent events
Increased irritability and frustration
More sensitivity to minor personal criticisms
Withdrawal from social events
Loss of interest in food, sex, exercise or other pleasurable activities
Being awake throughout the night
Increased alcohol and drug use
Staying home from work or school
Increased physical health complaints like fatigue or pain
Being reckless or taking unnecessary risks (eg, driving fast or dangerously)

Being anti-social. Alienating oneself from your friends and family. Not enjoying the things you once loved. Easily giving up and no longer caring about things. Letting yourself go. Weight loss, or weight gain.
