Early 96 the explorer canme through with the gt 40 motor. and late 96 the gt 40p motor came along which you have to buy special headers to put the p engines in a mustang because the spark plugs aren't angled like the gt 40 motor. and the gt 40p motor has hyper tech pistons not forged pistons. But to answer the question, they will fit as long as you buy the special headers and put all the sensors, distributor, timing cover, water pump and all accessories from the mustang motor, including the stang wiring harness. You have to change the oil pan and the oil pump pick up from the mustang into the new motor (just clean it). and as far as speed density goes, as long as you're not putting a huge cam in it, it will run fine. Basically if you use the heads and intake from an explorer motor onto a stang motor it's supposed to give 30 hp. but if you put an explorer motor in you will have 215-225 hp. instead of rebuilding the stang bottom end and then put the explorer heads and intake you should go to 255 hp. and still drive basically like it's bone stock (no drivability issues). This is from someone that has worked on mustangs/capris for several years.

Cobra's and some limited Explorers had 302's but remember Cobra is the type of ammentities in the car not the car itself. As far as motors go for mustangs, if it had a six an eight will fit. The problem is the harnesses that run the damn thing. They are not interchangeable, and the only source I know of to get it right is from Painless wiring. Otherwise, sell yours, buy one with it in it.
Try a web search for the Mustang Corral.com these are the experts and they don't do anything but Mustangs.

Yes, it's true that the 5.0L (302) engines in the model year Explorers you've are similar IN APPEARANCE, there are many differences. Firstly, the '96 to '00 Explorer engines are OBD-II EEC-V, and your '88 Mustang engine is EEC-IV, which means NONE of the sensors or actuators on the Explorer engine will work in your Mustang. To tell you the truth, the ONLY parts you'll be able to use from the Explorer is the LONG BLOCK. But you'll need the intake, oil pan with the proper oil pump and pick-up with the distributor (the Explorers use coilpacks), as well as the all your EEC-IV electronic components from your Mustang. Hope this helps.

explorer motors are the same as a reg 5.0 not a cobra motor. the explore motor has better breathing capabilities. just buy a rebuild kit for it.pistons, rings, rod/main brngs cam lifter springs and that alone will freshen it up and the cool thing is that you can pick cams, piston compressions etc while you are rebuilding it. it would be far cheaper than buying another motor

The Explorers got heads that are similar to the GT40 heads, and the intake is also similar to a GT40 intake. They are better than what you have, and are probably worth some horsepower. However your problem is your car is a speed density car. Without converting to mass air flow your car is going to have trouble getting adjusted to the new parts (Adjusted probably not the word I'm looking for). To really see a gain, and for your car to run properly, you're going to need to convert it over to mass air flow.
All in all, running a mass air flow conversion, the explorer heads and explorer intake, you might gain 30 horsepower.

The hot chick is right to an extent. You could use the entire engine, but you will have to do some wiring mods. If you really want to make it worth it just move to a carburetor. That way you can clean up the engine bay and have a more mechanically reliable engine.
