I would have to agree that unless there is a stronger outside influence in your life, you tend to be selfish and self-validating.

However if you have a stronger outside influence in your life, you can get past the id, ego and super ego in your life and live a life of servanthood to the stronger outside influence and others.

Sometimes, but this is not the ego's true nature.
I think the Critical Thinking Foundation is in error on that one. The mind and ego have a natural curiosity to know truth, and to compare and contrast its ideas and theories, with new information and stimulus.
In other words, most egos want to know if they are 'right or wrong'.
Sometimes, egos take their separateness too far and can become arrogant 'adversaries' to the greater good. In other words, they are their own worst enemies.

-----Still stoned:
The newly developing ego will often assert its individuality over others, but the more developed ego understands the equality and unity that underlies relationships.

The ego is not a stepchild of the Self.

Ego defeat hurts.
Even after your Born Again.
The wrong self Thoughts build a pretty Strong house, hard to tear down and Rebuild based on the Word of GOD.
You have Two Minds, First is you, a Spirit--Second is your Soul.
The Second Mind (soul) is in the Mental Realm.
It is attacked (or affected) by satan's firey darts (thoughts) if you let it be affected.
Satan was Kicked out of the Spiritual Realm, he operates mostly in the Mental Realm now-a-days.
Hope this helps.

The ego is often referred to as the lower-self or the pseudo-soul. Ego is personal awareness, where soul is transpersonal awareness. The goal seems to be to align the ego with the soul's purpose. This means learning to observe and control ones ego.
