I was given a long haired Siamese cat from a home that didn't take very good care of her. She has horrible mats in her fur and I was trying to cut them out tonight and I accidentally cut her skin. I am just horribly sick about it and I know that I will NEVER try doing that again. I put some neosporin on it and I am going to call the vet tomorrow, but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Well, if the cat is not bleeding profusely and the cut seems small just relax a little and call the vet in the morning.

You have learned the hard way why it takes a professional or an experienced person to deal with severe matting. The mats start forming at the skin and scissors almost never can do the job. Also your scissors aren't sterile so if you pierce the skin you can introduce an infection. Your vet's technician can use clippers on the mats and though the cat won't look pretty with a lot of clipping you will be able to start regular combing to keep them from forming again. You can get a special comb at the pet store that has "swivel" teeth and the cat will accept combing with that more easily than with a flea comb. Brushing with the flexible metal teeth on a small dog brush will help remove the excess hair from a long-haired cat. My cat likes this and I do it most every night or at least several times a week when he comes to spend some cuddle time with me. After I brush I use the comb with the flexible teeth to remove even more hair.

A high quality meat diet will definitely reduce the tendency for mats too so really consider changing the diet along with the combing and brushing.

My cat who was on a kibble diet had mats and I usually had to have the vet office remove them. He was changed to an all meat diet last spring and has not had a mat since.

you should be fine, no matter what you know the cat has too feel better witrh those mats out of her hair!! Kudos to you for helping an animal in need!!

Neopsorin should be fine unless it's deep and bleeding...then you might want to go to theemergency vet. But antibiotic ointment is prolly all the vets gonna give ya. Just love her tonight and I'm sure she'll forgive you!!

If there is a next time for a major redo...go to a groomer.

The neosporin should be fine...that is probably all the vet will do, unless the cat needs stitches.

Do you think he needs stitches? If not, just keep up with the nepsporin and if it is in a place where the cat lickes it off...you might need to use a cone on its neck for a few days or so.

DOnt worry.

Sounds like you've done just about all you can do; assuming it's not bleeding profusely, just let her take care of it. If it's large enough that you think it might require stitches, then get her to the vet.

Oh man, you've done about all you can do...just get her into the vet asap. She may need stitches. Hope all's ok, give her some extra treats tonight!

as long as she has stopped bleeding, she will probably be okay. call the vet in the am just in case, and also be sure to ask about a recommendation for a groomer. good for you for helping the kitty!!!
