Take a look at the total ounce weight of the carpet. the higher the ounce weight the plusher the carpet (down side would be a higher cost), but if you are looking for a long lasting carpet go for the higher ounce weight. if you are choosing carpet for your home, more samples the better, don't look at the carpet up close - stand back from the small samples (place them on the floor) to get an "overall" view of the color choices along with your other finishes in your home. Also, take a look at them in the different light sources in your home, daylight, night (with un-natural lighting). A cut/loop pile carpet is a good selection for a high traffic area - the fibers are both cut and loop which will help with hiding traffic patterns for a longer period of the life of the carpet. Good luck - lots of choices out there. Be sure to do your homework via the internet and research the brands out there if you are looking at a big purchase with lots of square yardage. Also, compare fiber type and carpet construction between your final picks. I'm sure you can find some helpful information on the web to determine the best fit for you and your needs. Have fun!

Face weight, which is density. which will dictate the cost. The heavier oz carpet the more money. Also make sure you do not get Olifen they appear to have great prices but will wear extremely fast.
Your best bet is starting with a 100%nylon.Then you will want a padding that is at least 6lb density. Most manufacturers will not guarantee the carpet for wear if it isn't at least a 6 lb pad. I prefer 8 lb. pad for a good cushion with not a lot of give.Do not be fooled into thinking a thicker pad is better. A pad should not be thicker than 1/2.So remember the more the carpet must flex on the pad the faster it wears. Lastly and most important is the install. A good carpet improperly installed will result in many problems. From accelerated wear to unsightly seams and carpet wrinkles from not being power stretched in. Best of luck to you.

Density of the carpet (anything over 40 ounces is considered good). When you peel back the carpet you see less backing.
Also the under pad is very important make sure you get a good under pad. It's as important as the carpet and will even make a cheaper carpet feel expensive.

My own ideas: I press random buttons on toys that sing and stuff and run away. Ah good times. And then I just go do the same thing to those singing cards... oh and... act like a nerd. glasses, pants pulled up high... (I didn't do this but my sister did once..) The ones on the site: Lol so entertaining. I have to do some of those next time so I won't be bored.

Color - it has to match or be total contrast to the wall.
Size - are you going to cover the entire floor or just in the middle of it. Entire floor then it has to match with the wall else contrast color.
Design - No jazzy design if the carpet is for the entire floor if it is a small in size in the middle then YES.
Cost - your affordability.
Durable - is it for business or home.... accordingly quality can be chosen.
hm.... that's it i can think of...
