At my school we'll be running a playschool for 3-5yr olds. I have a pretty good idea for transportation and safety week, but I have one dilema. Can a 3-5 year old make a paper airplane? Does anyone have easy instructions for making a simple airplane with 3-5 year olds...that they could follow easily?

Most of your kids will not be able to do this - at least not successfully. They may be very disappointed when their airplanes don't fly. Another option (albeit a slightly more involved one) would be to make styrofoam airplanes. These can be painted by the kids, and they will fly! It's just a lot more work for the teacher, because you'll need to cut out the planes for them to paint.

Another option (if you're really into the paper airplane idea) is to have the airplanes already folded. Let the kids unfold and refold if they'd like, and that way they can decorate them with stickers, markers, or crayons. They can write their name on the side of the plane or draw a flag or other decorations. You might have a few pictures of planes so that the kids have some ideas to go off of (but have more than one so that they don't feel pressured to copy it exactly).

The more freedom you give, the more fun they'll have, and the more fun you'll have too!

It may be hard for a 3 year old to follow the directions to make a paper airplane, but the 4 and 5 years olds should be okay. What you should do it make a model and show them how you fold and unfold. Let them practice with the one you did. Then you can help them make their own. They will pick up on it eventually.

Instead of making an airplane by folding paper why not make one out of a paper tube. You can cut out wings, and cone shape for the nose and make a tail out of construction paper. Decorate with lots of stickers and have markers and crayons around for drawing on windows etc.

If you want to go bigger get some big boxes and have the kids turn them into planes. A fun time will be had by all!

I would choose something different, there is just too much folding for a child that age to follow. And they will get frustrated easily. What about making "helicopters" where they just cut a rectangle 1/2 way down the middle and fold the "wings" opposite directions. Good Luck!

Preschoolers can easily make paper airplanes. Have them do the simple on where you fold the paper in half, and then fold in the tips. YOu know, the classic one.
