Sorry, I'm not even sure where you can get an accurate citation for this, because many "denominations" are not recognized.

But here is the information from Wikipedia, including a neat chart that shows a timeline of the major offshoots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations

There are so many that who can count them all. It is funny that you ask this question because we were studying Revelation today, and one of the things that John was told to write down was some warnings to the congregations, and one of them was

Revelation 2:15: "So you, also, have those holding fast the teaching of the sect of Nic·o·la′us likewise. 16 Therefore repent. If you do not, I am coming to you quickly, and I will war with them with the long sword of my mouth."

Ephesians 4: 3-6: "3 earnestly endeavoring to observe the oneness of the spirit in the uniting bond of peace. 4 One body there is, and one spirit, even as YOU were called in the one hope to which YOU were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all [persons], who is over all and through all and in all."

I don't think that Jesus intended for everyone to go off in their own directions, but to stick with the truthful teachings.

2 Timothy 4: 1-5: "I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is destined to judge the living and the dead, and by his manifestation and his kingdom, 2 preach the word, be at it urgently in favorable season, in troublesome season, reprove, reprimand, exhort, with all long-suffering and [art of] teaching. 3 For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. 5 You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do [the] work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry."

How many "sects" do you know of that all the members preach and teach as Jesus and his apostles and disciples did, and that Jesus commanded his followers to do down to this very day?

Matthew 28: 19 & 20: "19 Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

Matthew 24:14: "14 And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come."

I read somewhere that there are at least 10,000 recognized Protestant denominations, not to mention the ones you see in street corners, all of which say they are the true Church and have the correct interpretation of Sacred Scripture.
Jesus Christ founded only one Church and that happens to be the Catholic Church. This is the only Church that can prove a direct and unbroken line of succession from Jesus to St. Peter up to the present pope. It is also the Church Jesus promised to guide till the end of the age.

Peace and every blessing!

There are 3 main branches

Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestanism(in which there are dozens of denominations)

There are also many minor branches(not all of them listed here):

Cristian Coptic(Ethiopia), Greek Catholic, Nestorian(largely heretical but still found in some parts of Asia), Mormonism....
