Say I book a flight at a nearby city because it is cheaper to fly from there instead of my larger airport and it connects here to go to where I am going anyway, and I happen to "miss" my flight and get to the airport here in time, can I just board the connecting flight? Will they let me do that?

I don't think so. If you miss your flight from your point of origin, they will cancel your entire reservation. You'd have to get to your original departure airport. But check with the airline to make sure. It does seem stupid that you have to do all that to get a cheaper flight... who knows why airlines have their pricing that way.

If it's not that much cheaper to book it that way, you could also consider paying just a little more to avoid the inconvenience... You might wind up paying more in the long run getting to the less convenient airport.
