teryaki is thicker and sweeter than soy sauce, it's probably what you are thinking of

Try oyster sauce - that tastes fantastic with rice or stirfried green vegies - even chicken!
And theres another product by Maggi Seasoning - it's like soy but not...

could be hoisen sauce. it is thick and sweet and comes in a jar. you spread it on chinese pancakes for moo shu but it is also good on rice.
recipe: mix hoisen sauce, a little soy sauce, and orange marmalade in a medium frying pan and heat til bubbly.. you can add onions and green peppers to the sauce, some hot pepper flakes if you like it, add cooked chicken or thinly sliced pork and serve over rice. i like to add peanuts, too. yum!

Sweet and Sour if reddish in color. Duck Sauce if more yellowish in color.
I prefer Duck Sauce.

its either sweet and sour, or if its the same color as soy sauce it might be oyster sauce or stir fry sauce. ur question made me hungry.. ;p good luck

Next time you eat at that restaurant, ask the waiter/waitress about the sauce. I am sure they will tell you what it is. Hopefully they know what goes in your food...
