I have a genuine copy of Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers. I am installing onto a new hard drive, however, I lost the documentation during a recent move. How do I get a valid product key to make it work?

Call Microsoft customer assistance. You can get the number from the website. They can talk you through how to navigate the registry to see if you can retrive the number or they can get info from the numbers etched on the install disk itself. I had to do this last fall and although I had a little bit of run around to get to the right department, I was able to get a new product key code - Free.

My advice - Do not go into the registry of your computer unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

If you still have the old version running somewhere, you can extract the license key using something like Belarc advisor. Otherwise, you're out of luck. I wouldn't use someone elses number for office XP - MS seems to be more anal about tracking versions after Office 2000.

Go to Microsoft.com they have a place where you can get a new product key once they verify yours is genuine. They run a check on your system and you may need to insert the original XP disk in your CD drive.
