Actually, cold temperatures cause fruit to ripen faster. That's why you don't see apples, for example, being kept on a refrigerated shelf at the store. Fruit lasts longer and stays fresher if you keep it at room temperature. There are only a few fruits that should be refrigerated, like berries, so only put them in there if they have a label that says "keep refrigerated" or "for best quality, refrigerate". Most will not have such a label.

The food that lasts the longest is the ones with the most chemicals, it helps it preserve for a very long time. Otherwise it is canned fruit and vegetables.

In the frig. Temperature slows down chemical reactions that affect shelf life. However you must be careful of the exact temperatures since some fruits will hold better at different refrigerated temperatures. I think bananas are one that the cold refrigerator temp's could actually cause problems with shelf life.

OUTSIDE of the fridge. yes putting food in the fridge stops them from over ripening but it breaks down the food and makes it less like the texture it is susposed to be
