stomach ulcers

The mucus lining in your stomach is responsible for releasing pepsinogen, HCl, and intrinsic factor into your stomach. The pepsinogen and HCl can be taken care of by the small intestine and the pancreas but the intrinsic factor has no substitute.

The intrinsic factor is responsible for vitamin B12 absorption. Without it, your body can't use B12, which is necessary for red blood cell formation. This is a problem in procedures like stomach stapling (where part of the stomach is removed) and can be treated by regular injections of vitamin B12.
