I am getting horrible migraine headaches. I have trid using Midrin and Imatrex, with modest results. i am looking for something to suppliment them with, such as accupuncture or something like that. Does anyone have any experience with something that will help with Migraines?

Honey I am in the same boat as you. My ship took sale about 5 years ago. and i HONESTLY can't remeber a day with out some kind of headache. Imatrex does nothing for me at all. Midrin is ok, but nothing that really takes the pain away. I am going to start going to an accupuncturist very soon so Im hoping this will help. Other wise the only other thing that really helps me is pain meds and sleep. But I work to much so that I can't take pain meds that often so I just work with one, unfotunaily that is most of the time. I did physical therapy with ultrasonic message to my neck and shoulder areas and that helped a lot becuase of the tension in my neck cuasing some of my headaches!

Godd luck my dear! If you want to e mail me I can let you know once i start going to the accupuncutirst!

If Imitrex didn't help then it's either one of two things:
1) Either you didn't take the Imitrex early enough. It's supposed to be taken withing about 15 minutes from the beginning of the migraine.
2) Or you didn't have a migraine but a sinus infection. The symptoms are just about identical. When you look down with your head facing the floor, does it feel like your eyes are popping out? Does it feel painful at all in that area? If so, then it is a sinus infection and Imitrex will have no effect on it because it is a vasconstrictor effecting your blood vessels - not your sinuses.
If it is indeed a sinus infection, it is usually caused by bacteria and you'll thus need antibiotics. A doctor will be able to tell by simply looking up your nosdrills with light.

I wish I had something conclusive I could tell you, but I don't. Imitrex works moderately well for me as well; the only other thing I've found that helps is lying in a cool dark room, or just plain old SLEEP. Excedrin Migraine formula helps a little bit sometimes. If you're not on the higher dose (100 mg) of Imitrex, as your doctor to boost your dosage; you might also consider the spray or injectable versions.

The one thing that helped me was going on birth control pills that allowed me to have only four periods a year, as my headaches were hormonally triggered; if yours are similar, this might be a viable option for you as well.

Get an allergy test. Your migraines may be caused by allergies. I can't take Imitrex but I do take Fioricet and Fiorinal and they both work fine for me. Good luck.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

I found none of those helped me. I found out that I was cleaning with ammonia and it was causing headaches. Also allergies, and did great with zyrtec every once in a while with 3 ibpro. or about 500mgs. Maybe they are treating you for the wrong thing is what I am suggesting.
I have used acupuncture for a arthrictic wrist and my headaches and did great-really made a differance.

If the meds don't work, perhaps they are cluster headaches. Do they happen at night, do you wake up with them? Pain behind one eye?
If so, look up cluster headaches on the web. Some calcium channel blockers, like Verapamil, have been shown to help. Good luck.

You should first try a combination of 2 tylenol, 2 advil and some caffeine. I too get disabling migraines, and this combination works amazingly well for me.
