I have found some curly, rough, thicker than usual hair strands in my hair. I accidentally pulled one out and its root had a whitish coating around it. My mom said it's dead hair. What is it actually?

Also, what causes it?

It could be nothing but product build up. If you use hairspray, mousse, gel or any other type of products on your hair then that is most likely your problem. When shampooing your hair, get it lathered up good with suds and put a hand full of baking soda on it. Work it through the hair and then rinse very good. That should take any build up off the hair.

your hair (all of it) is actually dead...your hair is not alive or it would hurt when your cut it :)

the white coating around it is probably the root...you must have plucked it out from the root which is like a tiny white sleeve.

nothing to worry about though :)

The white coating around the root is probably an oil plug.
