Your cat most likely isn't doing this to annoy you or wake you up. He/she may be trying to nurse, as one of the previous answers said. Your cat thinks you are his mom and trusts you. My cat used to nip at my toes in my sleep when she was a kitten, but outgrew it. Is your cat fully grown yet or still a kitten? He'll probably stop doing it eventually, but I would be careful not to yell at him or scold him too harshly. As weird as this sounds it may hurt his feelings if you scold him for doing this.

Is your cat actually bitting or nursing? If nursing, no breaking that habit! It's a bonding thing your cat does to feel comfortable with you. If biting, keep a spray bottle of water on your night stand, when he starts biting, spray him immediately with water. A few sprays should do the trick.
