If you are Catholic, yes.

If you are not Catholic, you are welcome to join the Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches in following the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.

With love in Christ.

Ideally, yes. The ashes is just a reminder to Catholics "to repent and believe" in the gospel. That is what the minister says when he puts the sign of the cross, with the ashes, on your forehead. Fasting or abstinence from something which distances us from God is an excellent way of thanking Jesus for his sacrifice.
Peace and every blessing!

You don't HAVE to give up anything. It is more like, "what are you going to improve about yourself during the next 40 days." It is supposed to be something that will LAST. Not just something you give up, then go right back to.
