I don't know if you want real clay that needs to be fired to harden it permanently, or if you just want something that is maleable to mold into shape for a project. If the second, try this.

Cornstarch Clay

1 cup cornstarch

2 cups salt

1 1/3 cups cold water

Put salt and 2/3 cup water in pan and bring to a boil. Mix cornstarch with 2/3 cup water and mix well. Blend 2 mixtures together and knead into clay. The dough has to be heated as it is combined to set. Makes about 3 cups. This clay can be air dried and then painted. Store unused clay in airtight container in the fridge.

You can form this into whatever shape you need and just let it air dry. It will harden and can be painted.

If you happen to live in a area with heavy, clay soils find an exposed outcrop of clay (look where a streambed has cut the soil), dig some out and add just enough water to make it workable.

I had no idea you could make clay in the oven, but I can't imagine it would taste very nice

You can't. But really I assume you really don't mean actual clay. I suspect use of a salt and cornstarch mixture would do what you want.
