Because he obviously still likes you. It sounds as though you decided to take the relationship back to the friends with benefits level and he wants to be in a relationship.

your ex is a wreck of insecurities that needs to drop the subject of returning love and stuff.
unfortunately, he cant let go because you are still sleeping with him.
you may have dropped the emotional attachment and is just having him for sex, but he is confused between no-love sex and just sex while you atwo are still playing around.
give him a rest and give your mind a rest, find someone, let him find someone else as well...quit playing w/ each other.
