Interesting question... I have asked many other volunteers as well as Relay For Life leaders in the American Cancer Society, and from what I understand, it may have originally been to choose a "royal" color to make survivors the "kings and queens" of Relay. Because Purple is the color representing ALL cancers.

I think it's for cancer. They have to have a color I guess, don't really know. I know it's pink for breast cancer.
