When starting out, my wife and I appreciated the cash the most. When we handed her cousin a check at her wedding, she started crying and thanked us over and over. Believe me, it's the best gift you can give.

Depends on what they need and how much you want to spend. If they are not registered anywhere, then go for a set of glasses and dishware in a basic color pattern that will go with anything. Or a set of canisters for the kitchen. Or maybe a gift box with lots of little things like a set of hand towels, bath towels and wash rags, and hand towels and oven mitts. Depending on how much you want to spend, considering they probably don't have a lot of money if they are that young, you go throw in a gift certificate to a nice restaraunt. Or just come right out and ask them or a close relative or friend that knows what they need. If they don't have a silverware pattern picked out you could go with a nice setting for 8 or 12. The prices on something like that could range from $20 to $100 depending on what you pick out. Of course, there are hundreds of other suggestions if they are starting from scratch like blenders, toaster ovens, hot griddles like you do pancakes on, nice coffee makers (like Gevalia) with a nice selection of gourmet coffees, a nice pot and pan set, a nice framed photograph or picture, a nice area rug for the den or living room.

Money is always a great wedding gift--couples who are starting their lives together need money to live with!
But, if you want to give a more lasting gift, you can check their registry. If they haven't registered, get them something timeless and classic--like crystal candlesticks. You could also get them some kitchenware like plates or a toaster or blender--something they can put to good use in their new home.

Cash.
It seems in sincere but they are having this wedding to pay for.
Even better are travellers checks so they can use it on their honeymoon.
In our tradition, a close family member will give $101.01 to start off.

I have to assume they are not registered, in which case I would go with cash or a gift certificate to a store you know they will use, such as target.
