Some of the most displeasant are the least threatening-such as a bicep-crunch(I could spend an hour trying to explain them, or I could show ya ;-)), straight ankle lock(not heel hook). The subs that crush the muscle are really painful can be waited out and weasled out of...sometimes. And if you do tap to it there is little to no damage. The ones against the joints are displeasant, but not excruciating(sp) until the real damage is done. Then the bad boys like chokes and heel hooks, different categories I know, either leave you unconcious or crippled when followed through. The only exception might be neck-cranks. Best advice is just to tap when you feel pressure, or like me, train to be better than that other guy!

Your all wrong - Its the Grovit!
Its a 3 way twist of the neck!
As your opponent tries to pop up out of a guillotiine, lock his head under your ribcage, place what was your choking forearm across the carotid artery area of his neck, place your hand on your other wrist - ala "fig4". and place your free hand on the opponents shoulder - NOW - push with the hand on shoulder, bend the wrist of the hand on the shoulder up and then 3rdly bring the wrist and forearm of the choking arm up too.
DO THIS VERY CAREFULLY!
You'll get a tap from any of the 3 movements - if you do all three together - the opponent will be tapping so fast they could be in Riverdance!!!! or they wont and they'll have a broken neck at C4!!!!
Dont try this unless you know what your doing! and for those that dont know - its not a mystical mythical move - just a seldom used Sub Wrestlin move.

the heel hook is probably the most unpleasant, even though it is not the most painful joint lock one could experience, and i will explain why.
when an arm bar, knee bar, kimura are applied, the receiver would automatically feel pain on the joint which could force him/her to tap out before the joint even breaks.
when a heel hook is applied, the knee is not forced to go the other way as it would be on a knee bar but would be rotated. the rotation of the knee, while the heel hook is applied, does not cause pain right away, so one would not tap out right away due to pain. the ligaments and tendons would tear first before the pain is felt by the receiver and by the time someone taps out due to pain, it is way too late because damage is already done on the knee.

Either the Kimura or the rear naked choke. Kimura's take the most effort to fight off since your arm is in such an awkward position, but most people caught in a rear naked choke usually tap out very quickly.

Well from what other user say, it sound like heel hook. However from personal experience, I've got my knee pushed backward beyond what's normal in wrestling match. The damage is similar to kneebar let go once little damage has been done, it was extremely painful and take age to heal.

well i gues it would depend on the person, like for me it would have to be the arm triangle. Ill explain, im am 5'9 195, i am an ex body builder and have big biceps. When i get in that pusition my neck starts to crank and i start feeling the clausterphobic feeling cuz there isnt really much room to move.

forget about the pain for a minute. all the holds are full of displeasure, but I would rate any of the chokes that causes unconsciousness. I say this because the other submissions cause plain pain, and it blocks out reason. but the choke holds create an emotional fear that in the certain future you will be out cold, and vulnerable. this is surely worse than joint pain, because pain is in the here and now and is certain, yet unconsciousness will remove you from the here and now and is uncertain.
we all dread the uncertainty and chaos. we are at our most vulnerable, like a child.

out of the one's you've listed i've have to say the heel hook cause by the time you feel the pain, you hear your knee pop and seperate. this will be with you long after the other submissions you've mentioned
