I am in search of anyone, ANYONE, who can provide a clear and definitive summation of these two concepts beyond their linguistic contradiction to one another. In essence, are these two absolutes (and if so--what and why) OR are they merely relative ideals to contrast with one another?

Many of you have attempted to explain that good exists independent of evil (vice versa) and is thus something to be striven for-- yet no one has successfully done this without mentioning one while defining the other.

They are almost completely relative. You must understand that we have several dirves i.e. to procure food, to procreate, etc. From these drives come the basic impulses we feel. When these impulses come into contact with society, we form opinions of what are originally created just for survival. Murder is a tool to advance one slef in the race, yet fear of death in most societies made murder unacceptable. No one wants to be murdered. This gets more complicated as layers of reason and belief and impulse pile on. But they are relative. Look at different societies. Why was slavery so accpetable 1000 years ago and so abhorred today? Society has changed and so have the meanings of good and evil.

The only way you can have a definitive answer is if good and evil are measured in terms of an objective verity. But the notion of good and evil, even in relative terms implies such a standard. Evil can be measured the same way coldness or darkness can be meausured. Darkness and coldness don't actually exist, they are measured in terms of a lack of light or heat. Same with evil. It is measured in terms of the lack of wholeness/completeness that should be there.

If you believe in God, Jesus Christ and the bible they most certainly are absolutes. Other ways to describe would be Life vs Death, Righteousness vs Sin, Immortality vs mortality. If you are interested email me and I'll send you some suggested reading that would back this up. No way to define in a comprehensive manner in this forum.

they are their opposites, think bout it? i think of it this way. like in a book called the birth of tragedy. you either lie to create a future that is a lie, or you tell the truth to move a self through the bad to get to the good. This reality proves to be of the first statement. think about it. i am no genius, but nothing seems to change with ones telling us what is good. think about it. you will know what is truly good, and honest. think for yourself, question authority. Evil is the absence of good, just as darkness is the absence of light

Evil is a corruption of good... not a balance.. not simply a contrast

both are real

They are subjective - i.e. they are value judgments we make about people's behaviour.
