Unless you have a highly complex tax return, any of the major tax prep software packages will do fine.

I've used Tax Cut for years and am quite happy with it. My returns have grown increasingly complex over the years with rental properties, investments, retirement funds, dividends and interest, etc. and I've never had a problem with Tax Cut getting it right every time.

I usually hold off until near the end of the filing season to make sure that there are no late updates that impact my return, though. There was one several years ago that got some negative press but I hadn't filed yet so it was a non-issue for me. I just updated the software and it automatically adjusted my tax liability with nary a complaint.

Turbo Tax has been said to have a friendlier user interface, though you couldn't prove it by me. I don't like their license terms so I don't use it. Tax Cut is easier to override if you don't like the way that the program treats a tax issue; that's a plus if you know what you are doing but can be dangerous if you don't. Tax Cut is also about $15.00 cheaper for the version that I need.

a bigger return has greater pages to it. i assume a tax preparer would desire to post a variety 1040 as a replace of 1040-EZ to make it "bigger" yet that may not make a dime's distinction on your REFUND. A tax return is the varieties and schedules which you record with the IRS. Any funds which you come again once you record your return is termed a refund. As to which way will positioned greater funds on your pocket, pass with any loose tax utility, or grab the varieties from the IRS internet site and do it the previous kind way, via hand. Your refund will the the comparable the two way so which you're $eighty 5 forward via no longer figuring out to purchase difficulty-free tax prep. The "creativity" of a genuine tax professional basically kicks in once you have a complicated tax difficulty. in case you have questions like, "whilst would desire to I sell my shares to cut back the tax hit?" or "How would desire to we shield this internet working Loss for the suitable tax income?" then a tax expert with extensive journey would be well worth his or her weight in gold. Creativity on an difficulty-free return often skill disaster, which includes a bent scam artist who probalby would have flown the coop via the time that the audit be conscious hits.

You are getting ripped off. Unless you have serious deductions, property, kids, 401k, and all of that you should find someone cheaper. Or of course you could do it yourself. The software that the preparers at H&R Block is very similar to turbo tax. So save yourself some cash. It bad enough uncle SAM rips you off don't let the tax man do it too.

Please don't pay $250 for a simple, straightforward tax return. If you made less than $52,000 for '06, you can go to irs.gov and get a list of websites where you can electronically file your federal taxes for free. You might have to pay for the state return but it is a minor fee. If you really need the tax software for the advanced features, either program will do - they're both user friendly. However, don't waste the $ if you don't have to. Keep as much of your money as you can in your pocket, it looks the best there! :)

I've used both programs and had good experiences. My taxes are only semi-complex...if yours are really involved it may save you money in the long run to go to a pro (plus also consider the value of your time, $250 / x hours at the computer...)

I would. They are pretty simple to use. $250 is a large amount to pay for preparation fees, usually it's around $80.
