there is no direct bus to Shenzhen from Shanghai and changing buses will cost more.. try hard to get your train ticket.
if u cannot get ticket to shenzhen then try to Hongkong... from HK you can go back to shenzhen by Train via Lowu or Bus via Lok Ma Chau

There are no direct buses as far as I know. You may try going to Ningbo first and hopefully get a bus from there to Shenzhen, but I can't guarantee it is available. The only sure route by bus I know would be changing twice, first to Ningbo or Hangzhou, then take a bus to Xiamen, then from Xiamen to Shenzhen. But when you add up it is more expensive than by train or even plane, and the time would be really long when you add up the delays.

You can try instead to get plane ticket deals from agencies or online websites such as www.ctrip.com or www.elong.com; if you look well you should find a ticket for 500RMB or less. Go for early flights or those late at night. You can also try the new low cost airline Spring Airlines (if my translation is right) the website is www.china-sss.com (only in chinese I think) you can get really good deals if you book early.

Good luck and hope I have helped,

Yes there are buses to Shenzhen. Perhaps not direct buses, but yes there are buses. Look for buses to Guangzhou, Hong Kong or Dongguan. You can transfer there to your ultimate destination. You can figure the bus ride will be even longer than the train ride for sure. maybe much longer. You might be better off to wait til the train opens up.I pity you!! That is a long ride and will not be comfortable.

Safe travels.

take the plane!!!! i took a train from shanghai to nanjing... it smelled like urine and it was soo crowded... never again...they guy next to me complained about a hair in his noodles, then he continued to eat....uhhh

a bus from shanghai to shenzen is going to be even longer than the train... you know just spend the couple hundred US dollars... trust me... it's worth it... it'll save you alot of time and it's cleaner..
