Cat Curls, which is also good for your back, as I have a bad back as well. On the carpet on your hands and knees, curl up r
back while sucking in your tummy & inhaling, then down exhaling
Start @ 5 and proceed to 10 and see how far you can go?

I assume that you cannot do the normal situp without pain by what you asked. I recommend getting one of those big inflatable exercise balls that comes with a manual. There are lots of new exercises for core [trunk, torso] strength out there using that big ball. If one of them is painful, try others. Listen to your body.

Yes, it's called the dead bug! Laying flat on your back-arms straight in the air and legs straight up in the air like ur a dead bug...extend one arm of your arms backward like you are laying it straight on the floor and at the same time extend the opposite leg of the arm you used toward the floor... do not however lay them completely on the floor just hold them for about the count of 10 and then do the opposite side switching until you have built yourself up to about 30 or do more. My doctor told me that one and it doesn't hurt your back at all. My son also did throw downs in baseball and they go like this...Lay flat on the floor and hold someone's ankles...bring your legs straight up in the air with ankles together---(make sure you hold your legs together) have the person whom you are holding their ankles bend and grab you feet and throw them down toward the floor at any angle...you on the other hand have to tighten and not allow them to hit the floor (restrain them from hitting the floor) and bring them back to the same position as the person continues to throw them to the left, straight, right and you continue to repeatedly tighten the abdominal walls of your stomach and abdomen bringing them to the original position having them throw down.

I think you should take up swimming. It is great for the core and the buoyancy will be good for your back.
