Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are made domestically. They beat out any "American made" vehicle that is really made in Canada or Mexico.

1992 (or newer) Pontiac Bonneville with the 3800 engine.
Often, they are adult-owned and, hopefully, professionally maintained. If taken care of, you might be able to drive it to 200,000 miles.
They are a medium-sized car so you can pile a few friends in it. It won't look too much like your father's Oldsmobile because many have alloy wheels, spoiler, and sunroof. Should you be involved in an accident, airbags and anti-lock brakes may tip the safety odds in your favor.
The gas mileage is decent and the repairs will be moderate. I've seen many Bonnevilles with over 200,000 miles on them.

80s: GM G-body, Ford Fox-body
90s: RWD Fords, Ford Ranger, Buick Regal, 94-96 Impala, Caprice
Notice the lack of compacts. The Escort was good, but not really the best at anything.

96 Geo Prizm. Mine did 280k miles. it was used as a messenger car, all i did was change the oil on time, changed the plugs 3 times, 3 radiator flushes, 3 tranny pan drop changes. absolutely no parts, other than the spark plugs, belts, filters and tires. it did close to 30 mpg average city driving.- i sold it to an employee and last time i talked to him, he said it's still running with 450k miles.

You could buy a copy of "Consumer Reports" buying guide, they list the best and the worst of used cars, as determined by readers.
