By choice, he doesn't have a cell phone. He doesn't have cable. He doesn't like to watch tv. He watches lots of movies. But he goes alone most of the time. He reads books a lot and newspapers. He likes to spend time outdoors, camping, etc by himself. His answering machine greeting is very short, I can hardly hear him. I left a message on it for the first time. He still hasn't returned my call for a week. He said his apartment is cold. He has never invited me over but we go out to eat sometimes. He is funny, generous, and sweet. I would like to date him, but are these warning signs? He's in his 40's and never married.

Warning signs of what? He sounds like a typical, normal lonely guy. Sounds a bit like myself(except I have a cell, cable, computer, watch TV...don't go to movies and have no answering machine(though my cell has voice mail) and I keep my place hot).
He might be 'weird' to normal people....but sound like an OK guy.

YES, these are all warning signs - I would be especially suspicious of the fact that he has never invited you to his place. He seems to enjoy doing alot of things by himself, so unless you want to be left sitting alone at home most of the time, I would definitely find someone else to date.
