we have an 10 year old cat living in our house, and her mother died 2 weeks ago. the house is very lonely without her , so we decided to get a new kitten [ 8 wks ] the older cat is not to excited about this and wants to be in the room with the rest of the family when the kitten is in the room with us but everytime the older cat goes near the kitten it hisses and tries to swat at it. i just need to know a way that both cats can be in the same room with eachother and even get along with eachother.

be patient. It will take some time, but it will be okay. Can you maybe seperate the kitten at nighttime in the bathroom with a baby gate up? This way, the older cat can see the kitten but not hurt it.... When the older cat tries to swat, just say firmly "no". They will get along... I have a 3 year old female and brought in a 4 month old male...they get along now.

I'm in the same boat, or was, my kitten was 4 wks and my cat is ten. At first my older cat would try to beat up the baby after a few weeks I caught them sleeping together on the couch. I think my older cat was just pissed and felt she needed to establish dominance when she realized that the kitten posed no threat she softened to her. I would just let them figure it out on their own, cats are cool with kittens more than they are cool with full grown cats they don't know.

They will get along fine after 2-3 weeks. Your older cat will have a real problem adjusting but she will get over it. They may even become fast friends, but at least they will tolerate each other.
