These are great questions to ask your vet.
If the tear or injury is small, then sure, it may heal on its own. However, if there are large tears or punctures, then surgery may be required.
They would find the cut through various ways - MRI, ultrasounds, ct scan, etc.
However, if he's responding to treatment and the blood seems to have stopped, then he may make it through ok.
Just an additional note - put baby locks on all cabinets containing garbage or anything dangerous. Use lidded latched trash cans for any accessable trash cans. It can help prevent a recurrance of this.
Good luck to you both! : )

I am not advocating this to anyone but on the farm we fed our dogs (mostly labs) chicken bones all the time with never having a problem. as far as the splinter thing go's I found bones are less sharp if cooked. I will experement next time I eat chicken. but to be on the safe side only feed your dog an age appropriete diet of DOG food. is it possible the blood could be from some other injury and since you mentioned the bones thats all the vet looked for? many things can cause internal bleeding. good luck with the little guy I am sure he will pull through. I think it's great you took action quickly and got him to a vet.

Not to scare you or anything but I had a dog years ago eat some chicken bones and he was bleeding out both ends and he ended up dying. On the other hand I have a black lab (5 years old) and he has gotten into plenty of chicken bones and was fine, mind you he was sick for a few days. So I think it all depends on how bad the internal cut is and where it is inside.
I hope your dogs ok in the end.

When cooked, chicken bones break up into splinters. If they are raw, they don't. Imagine swallowing a box of very sharp toothpicks and you'll have an idea of what your dog feels. You did the best thing taking him to the vet. If there is no rectal bleeding or vomiting, he will probably be ok. Unfortunately, an x-ray will not show any soft tissue damage (ie perforation in a vital organ) Just follow the vets advice and monitor him very closely to make sure that his appetite isn't changing, and his bowel movements are normal.

dangerous but it should be ok. I would recommend feeding you dog soft bread. Sometimes the bread can act as a cushion for some of the shaper parts of the bone. Also don't play heavily with the dog for at least a day. The problem with chicken bones is they can break and become sharp inside of any animal. Bending or pushing on the wrong area of your dog could cause a puncture inside of your dog. But if it's a small bone he should be fine

I'm sorry to hear this happened to your dog. The bone probably did scratch the lining of your baby's throat. Which will heal but keep your eye out for signs of infection. I've worked with dogs for many years now and I just wanted to let everyone on here know that chicken and pork bones are VERY dangerous for your dog to eat. If your dogs have eaten chicken bones with no problems, consider yourself lucky and don't chance it anymore. These bones split and can choke your dog as well as rip the lining of their throats and intestines, causing major problems and huge vet bills!!

I know you are worried, but as long as he is at the vet, he is in the best hands. Unless he was hemorraging blood from his rear, I would guess it is superficial and he will heal fine. I am glad you took him to the vet, too many people wont spend any money at the vet, even for a check up or spay-neutering- let alone some aliment like that.....

The cut will heal...The dogs attitude is everything.. Happy, spunky, tail wagging..there should be no worries. If he stops or slows down on eating..I would be conserned.
Chicken bones are the worse for dogs which I think you just figured out..they break down into like splinteres into a dogs stomach.
Good luck

He'll probably heal up, BUT...I'd just give the vet a call and let him/her know what you found. Exrays can miss things sometimes, and if a bone made a cut, and it's now starting to become infected...the vet may not have seen that the first time.

I'm no vet but personally I wouldnt worry too much, remember, in their original wild state, i.e. like wolves, they eat animals bones fur blood guts and all, they are supposed to do this, and us feeding them mushy food all the time isn't actually a good thing... my vet told me this..doggy going to be fine, I'm sure. My dog is a dreadful thief and scavenger, the more disgusting the object, the better as far as she's concerned, and yes, occasionally, she passes blood and throws up a bit, but a healthier dog would be hard to find.
