Do I really need to leave a tip at a low rent chain restaurant? I mean I am there with my girlfriend trying to date her as cheap as I can get away with, and eating the b4 evening priced meals to save a couple of quid.I normally aim to get out the door for 20 quid or less.Last time I went I left 97pence on the table for a 19 quid meal.

i hope that you're actually broke and it's not that you're just trying to be cheap....
i usually tip if i've had good service and i make sure it's roughly 10% of the bill.
and, like someone above has said, if you only left 97p as a tip when you were at another place, if i was your waiter / waitress, i'd have taken that as an insult! either tip properly, or not at all!

At the end of the day you can tip if you think they deserve it. I personally very very rarley tip except unless they have gone the extra mile to deserve it.

The tip is 10% of the total bill normally, or at least thats how the saying goes. I will tip to the nearest pound, if 10% is £2.40 I will leave £3.00. I always leave tips as cash, never through the till. Tips through the till are recorded and the taxman will tax it.

If you were going to leave 97p on the table I would have just left without leaving a tip at all.

That's a tough one, especially if you and your date/spouse have different attitudes on tipping. However, servers make next to nothing and count on tips to make up the difference. The standard is 20%. If service is truly poor I'll go as low as 10%, but that's really rare. Small tips make you look cheap, and believe me, you'll be remembered the next time you dine there. If the service met your expectations, open your heart and your wallet and give the server the 20% she earned.

The last time I went to a Havester the a group of four people in the smoking section left without paying anything via the back window. So I guess if you pay the bill at all they will be pleased.

The people working tables in those places are probably more broke than most working people. If I can not afford a 15% tip or more, I won't go out to eat AT ALL.

A £2 tip would have been more appropriate. However, I never tip in chain restaurants
