Area around Shaw is trailor parks, once you get past the trailor parks you hit some cotton fields and some pastors for grazing cattle, If you head west you will run into Columbia, SC, if you head east you will into the Atlantic Ocean.

Crime rate for Sumter SC is actually one of the highest in the country per capita, now considering there are only 30,000 people there, there actual amount of crime is not that bad, but considering the % of people in this small town that is effected by crime, I've seen it ranked as high as 1st in per capita crime rate %'s.

Community is typical mid-state SC, stay away from the East side of Sumter, thats where you'll find the worst kind of thugs in the world...the kind who are trying to prove they are thugs even though they are in a small town in SC....

I recommend moving north of base to Camden if you are not going to get base housing.....

Been there done that. 5 miles from Shaw AFB is Sumter, SC. It's an average city, nothing too fancy. It has an old downtown area. The main street is Broad Street. IT has many of the stores and restaurants along it. The one mall is the Jasmine mall. It is not huge but has some good stores in it. One great thing is that Myrtle Beach, SC is a little less than three hours away!

All in all, t is not a bad assignment or place to live.

Since I was stationed there forty years ago any information I would give you is a bit dated. At least you won't have to listen to the wine of any RB-66 engines taxing toward your barracks while you are trying to sleep.

Scumter' is not a bad town as small towns go, but there isn't a lot to do there.

My cousin lives down there and it is pretty much a small town type atmosphere. There isn't any more crime there then anywhere else in the world. There are a lot of places to eat, but that's probably about it.

My brother in law was there for four years and it is boring! Nothing to do unless you go to Myrtle Beach or Charleston and Savannah!
